New Year’s was a ‘Thames’ to remember: Strolling through Shanghai’s English Town

1

As 2016 dawned, a friend suggested that I travel to Songjiang. Two metros, a crowded bus filled with locals, followed by a three-hour walk and a passionate plea for help was in order to get there. However, wandering around the Anglo-world was worth the angst and I fell in love with old-fashioned town.

Thames Town is a hidden oasis that’s a popular local attraction. Expats are discovering the retreat but it’s still a well-guarded secret. The Yangtze River sets the backdrop and a blend of European and Asian architecture gives a cultural flair to the city.

The royal colors light-up the square and the shaded tree-lined streets offer tranquility to the city dweller. Sparkling fountains, colorful art creations and scenic walking trails are eagerly explored. Making my way to the waterfront, wedding parties were being photographed, children danced after brightly-colored bubbles and tourists toasted in New Year’s.

Although it was a struggle to get there and a strange experience being a minority in an English town, I’m glad I made the journey. It started 2016 off with a bang and I can’t wait to uncork the rest of the year.

Your starting the new year with a big bang, good for you. The pics are lovely. How fun to explore and your enjoying every minute of it, no regrets. Good Deal.Hugs, Lorna P.S. as of right now no plans to leave the country for this year, but it’s early yet so we will see. I will be going to Oregon in April for a week that’s about it for now. Marilyn and I would love to go back to the Isle of Capri but not sure when that will happen.
